Spring has finally arrived and with it comes warmer temperatures and an increased demand for water. To ensure a sufficient supply of drinking water is available, as it become necessary, pumping stations that have been dormant over the winter period will be brought on-line for the season. Increased flows and larger volumes of water traveling through our pipes may cause mineral sediment to lift from the bottom of the mains and flow with the water resulting in temporary discolored or brown water coming out of the tap.

In an effort to lessen impact and reduce the amount of mineral sediment as individual stations are brought online flushing at the point of origin will occur prior to distribution and an advisory will be posted to www.sudburywater.com, facebook and emailed directly to subscribers.

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN DEALING WITH MINERAL SEDIMENT:

Avoid running your tap water or using a washing machine or dishwasher while the water is noticeably discolored at the end of the day run a cold water faucet for a few minutes until the water runs clear or check for discolored water before using a washing machine or dishwasher.

If your white clothes or fabrics become stained due to discolored water, (only when water is running clear from your faucet) re-wash your laundry using detergent together with a Rust and Iron removing agent. Our business office maintains a free supply of Rust and Iron remover. Stop by anytime during regular hours to pick-up a few containers to keep on hand. These products also remove stains in toilets, sinks, tubs, tile and dishwashers.

Slight discoloration may sometimes linger for a few hours, it is not harmful to your health and only temporarily affects the appearance of the water it does not influence water quality. If water pressure or volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check your faucet screens and home filters for trapped particles. Running a cold tap for a few minutes will help to clear your plumbing system of mineral sediment.
