What Causes a Water Main to Break?

Because water mains are located underground, the specific cause may not be known until crews can inspect the affected section of pipe during the repair.

What to Do During an Emergency Water Service Outage:
During an emergency water main repair, customers are encouraged to limit water use as much as possible until repairs are completed and normal water service has been restored.

Reducing water use can help minimize the amount of sediment or discolored water that may be drawn into household plumbing when water pressure changes during a main break or repair.

Customers Should:

• Limit unnecessary water use during the outage and while repairs are underway.
• Avoid running faucets, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, and other water-consuming appliances unless necessary.
• Use stored or bottled water for drinking and cooking.
• If possible, postpone laundry and other activities that require significant amounts of water until repairs are complete and water service has stabilized.
• After repairs are completed and water service is restored, slowly open a cold-water faucet and allow the water to run until it is clear before resuming normal water use.
• If water appears discolored after service is restored, avoid using hot water until the cold-water supply runs clear. This can help prevent sediment from being drawn into the household hot-water system.
